Sports before 1001

This article presents a chronology of sporting development and events from time immemorial until the end of the 10th century CE. The major sporting event of the ancient Greek and Roman periods was the original Olympic Games, which were held every four years at Olympia for over a thousand years. Gladiatorial contests and chariot racing were massively popular. Some modern sports such as archery, athletics, boxing, football, horse racing and wrestling can directly trace their origins back to this period while later sports like cricket and golf trace their evolution from basic activities such ...

                                               

1001 to 1600 in sports

By 1600, rural folk in Great Britain had begun to play early versions of cricket, football and golf. Early in the 16th century, English public houses were showing interest in bowls and real tennis, as well as dice and cards, all of which the government tried to eliminate forcefully. According to Derek Birley, it was late in the 16th century that "licensing began to replace prohibition. a public house might be licensed to allow men of substance to engage in dice, cards, tables, bowls, and tennis on condition that there was no blaspheming or swearing, and no play before noon on working days ...

                                               

1601 to 1700 in sports

Sports became increasingly popular in England and Ireland through the 17th century and there are several references to cricket and horse racing, while bare-knuckle boxing was revived. The interest of gamblers in these sports gave rise to professionalism. The first known attempts to organise football took place in Ireland.

                                               

1701 to 1725 in sports

The beginning of the 18th century saw sport acquire increasing importance in the lives of people in England and Ireland. Professionalism was by then established in the major gambling sports of bare-knuckle boxing, cricket and horse racing.

                                               

1726 to 1730 in sports

Events 1730 - George Taylor began boxing at Figgs Amphitheatre and was a big favorite there. 6 June 1727 - Figg defeated Sutton in a rematch for the English bare-knuckle boxing championship. The bout lasted ten minutes over eight rounds. Figg retained the title until his retirement in 1730. 23 May 1727 - Figg and Ned Sutton fought in a 1 hour exhibition bout in London. 1726 - in several fights to 1730, Jack Broughton defeated unnamed opponents and won the admiration of James Figg. 30 May 1727 - Figg and Sutton fought in a second 1 hour exhibition bout in London. 1729 - Tom Pipes, one of Fi ...

Events 7 December 1734 - Death of James Figg. 1734 - Broughton defeated Bill Gretting, but it is unclear if it was a championship fight. 10 December 1734 - Taylor claimed the Championship of England title. He also built his own amphitheatre where he trained boxers and fought there on occasion. 1734 - Pipes was defeated twice by Jack Broughton the "Father of Boxing", but it is unclear if these were championship fights.
