Externalism is a group of positions in philosophy of mind which asserts that consciousness is not only the result of what is happening inside the nervous system, but something that happens or exists outside the subject. This contrasts with internalism, who believes that the mind only arises from neural activity. Externalism is the belief that consciousness is not only the brain and brain function.

There are different versions of externalism based on different ideas of what the mind does. Externalism emphasizes factors external to the nervous system. On the one hand, the mind can be influenced by external factors. On the opposite extreme, the mind is inevitably dependent on external factors. The extreme view of externalism maintains that the mind is either identical processes partially or totally external to the nervous system.

Another important criterion in the theory of externalism is, what aspect of Mind is considered. Some externalists focus on the cognitive aspects of the mind such as Andy Clark and David Chalmers, Shaun Gallagher, and many others – while others are engaged in either the phenomenal aspect of Mind or consciousness. Some philosophers consider consciousness phenomenal content and activities, such as William Lycan, Alex Byrne or Francois tonneau, Tid Rockwell or Riccardo Manzotti.

1. Proto-externalists. (Прото-externalists)

The proto-externalist group includes authors who were not considered as externalist but whose work offers a view similar to contemporary forms of externalism. The first group protexternalists to consider is a group of neo-realism active in the early 1900s. In particular, Edwin Holt suggested a view of perception that is the external world as an integral part of the mental content. His rejection of representation paved the way for the consideration of the external object is at once perceived:" nothing can represent a thing but the thing itself”. The words Holt has waited almost a century of anti-representationalist slogan by Rodney Brooks "the world is the best representation."

More recently, to respect the views were refreshed by Francois tonneau who wrote that" according to neorealism, consciousness is merely a part, or slice, of the environment. Neorealism implies that all conscious experiences, reliable or otherwise”

Another notable author Alfred North Whitehead. Whiteheads process ontology is a form of externalism since it endorses a neutral ontology. The main elements proceeded from microscopic activity up to the high level of psychological and emotional life. David ray Griffin wrote an update on the eels thought.

John Dewey also expressed the concept of mind and its role in the world that is in harmony with externalism.

Gregory Bateson also outlined an ecological point of view of the mind. Due to his knowledge in the field of Cybernetics, he was familiar with the concept of feedback, something interferes with the traditional division between internal and external systems. He questioned the traditional boundaries of reason and tried to Express an ecological view of it, trying to show that the Gulf between mind and nature is less obvious than it seems.

2. Semantic externalism. (Семантического экстернализма)

Semantic externalism is the first form of externalism which was named so. As the name implies, focuses on the mental content of semantic nature.

Semantic externalism says that mental content does not complement that in mind. However, the physical basis and mechanisms of the mind remains inside the head. It is a relatively safe move since it does not compromise our beliefs, what is inside our skull. Hilary Putnam, in particular, focused on intentionality between our thoughts and external state of Affairs – whether concepts or objects. To defend his position, Putnam developed the famous twin Earth thought experiment. Putnam, in his opinion, with the slogan "meanings are just not in the head."

In contrast, Tyler Burge emphasized the social nature of the external world suggesting that semantic content is externally constituted by means of social, cultural and linguistic interactions.

3. Phenomenal externalism. (Феноменальный экстернализма)

Phenomenal externalism extends the view of externalist to phenomenal content. Dretske Fred Dretske 1996 show that" the experiences themselves in the head, why else would close my eyes or stopping ones ears extinguish them? but nothing in the head need to have are the qualities that distinguish these experiences”. Dretske 1996, p. 144-145. So, although experiences remain in the head, their phenomenal content could depend on something elsewhere.

In a similar way, William Lycan defended externalist and representationalist view of phenomenal experience. In particular, he objected to the belief that qualia are narrow.

It has been often held that some, if not all, mental States must have a broad content, which is an external content to their vehicles. For example, Frank Jackson and Philip Pettit stated that" the contents of certain intentional States are broad or context-bound. The contents of some beliefs depend on how things are outside the subject” Jackson and Pettit 1988, p. 381

However, neither Dretske nor Lycan go far as to claim that the phenomenal mind extends literally and physically beyond the skin. In sum they suggest that phenomenal contents could depend on phenomena external to the body, while their vehicles remain inside.

4. Expanded consciousness. (Расширенное сознание)

The extended mind model suggests that cognition is more than the body of the subject. According to this model, the boundaries of cognitive processes are not always inside the skin." The mind consists of the instruments of thinking” Dennett 2000, p. 21. According to Andy Clark," cognition leaks out into body and world”. Then the mind is no longer inside the skull, but it is extended to understand which tools are useful, ranging from notebook, smartphones and USB drives. This, in a nutshell, this model of expanded consciousness.

When someone uses pencil and paper to compute large sums, cognitive processes extend to the pencil and paper. In a loose sense, nobody would deny it. In a stronger sense, it can be controversial whether the boundaries of the cognitive mind will not apply to pencil and paper. For most supporters of the extended mind, the phenomenal mind remains inside the brain. Commenting on the latest book, Andy Clarks Supersizing the mind David Chalmers asks. What about the big question: extended consciousness? In the dispositional beliefs, cognitive processes, perceptual mechanisms, and moods beyond the boundaries of consciousness, and it is likely that the unconscious part of them that is attracted.” Chalmers 2009, p. XIV

5. Enactivism and embodied cognition. (Энактивизм и воплощенное познание)

Enactivism and embodied cognition stress the tight link between cognitive processes, body and environment. Enactivism builds upon the work of other scientists who could be considered as proto-externalists, they include Gregory Bateson, James J. Gibson, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Eleanor Resch and many others. These thinkers suggest that the mind is either influenced by, or identical with the interactions between the world and agents. For instance, Kevin Oregan and Alva noë suggested in the original article that the mind consists of sensory-motor contingency between the agent and the world. In sensory-motor actions in emergency situations gives you the opportunity to act in a certain way and is the result of matching between environmental and bodily properties. To a certain extent conditional sensorimotor capabilities is strongly reminiscent of Gibson. In the end, Noah has developed a more epistemic version of enactivism where the content knowledge of the agent, what he can do in a certain situation. In any case it is externalist when he claims that" that, however, perception is not a process in the brain, but the skilful actions of the animal as a whole. To elective vision problems of neuroscience to develop new ways of understanding the neural basis of perception and consciousness” of construction 2004, p. 2. Recently, construction published a more popular and shorter version of his installation.

Enactivism receives support from various other correlated views such as embodied cognition or situated cognition. These views are usually as a result of the rejection of the classic computational view of the mind, which focuses on the notion of internal representation. Enactivism receives its share of negative comments particularly from neuroscientists like Christoph Koch 2004, p. 9:" while supporters point of view elective rightly emphasize that perception usually takes place in the context of action, I have little patience for their neglect of the neural basis of perception. If theres one thing that scientists are reasonably sure that the brain activity is necessary and sufficient for biological consciousness.”

Recall that enactivism is a case of externalism, sometimes limited cognitive and semantic aspects, some other times attempts to cover the phenomenal aspects. That is not enactivist still claimed that all phenomenal content is the result of interaction with the environment.

6. Recent forms of phenomenal externalism. (Последние формы ощущаемого экстернализма)

Some externalists propose explicitly that phenomenal content as well as the mental process are partially external to the body of the subject. The authors consider these views not only of cognition, but consciousness can be extended in the environment. While enactivism, at the end of the day, accepts the standard physicalist ontology that sees the world as made of interacting objects, these more radical externalists consider the possibility that there are some fundamental errors in our way to conceive reality and that some ontological revision is indeed unavoidable.

Teed Rockwell recently published a wholehearted attack against all forms of dualism and internalism. He proposed that the mind emerges not entirely from brain activity but from an interacting chain brain, body and world. He therefore endorses embodied cognition, considering that neuroscience wrongly endorses the form of Cartesian materialism, an indictment also issued for many others. Dwelling on the legacy of John Dewey, he argues that the brain and the body bring into existence the mind as a "behavioral field" in the environment.

Ted Honderich is perhaps the philosopher with extensive experience in this field. He defends the position that he dubbed "radical externalism", perhaps because of its ontological consequences. One of the main examples is that "what it is for you to be aware of the room you are in is for the room to exist." According to him," phenomenologically, what it is for you to be perceptual consciousness of the world somehow to exist”. Therefore he identifies existence with consciousness.

Another radical form of phenomenal externalism is the view called the spread mind Riccardo Manzotti. He questioned the separation between subject and object, perceiving them as only two incomplete perspectives and descriptions of the same physical process. He supports a process ontology that endorses a mind spread physically and spatio-temporally beyond the skin. Objects are not independent, as we know them, and the actual processes framing our reality.

Was more radical and complex explanations offered by Roger Bartra with his theory exocerebrum. He explains that consciousness is both inside and outside of the brain, and that the boundary that separates both worlds is useless and a burden in the explanation of its own. In his anthropology of the brain: consciousness, culture, and Agency "Cambridge University press", 2014, originally published in Spanish in 2005, he criticizes externalism and internalism.
