Papal encyclicals usually used for important issues, and is second in importance only to the most senior document issued by popes, an Apostolic Constitution.

The name of the papal Encyclical is usually taken from its first words. Pope John Paul II issued his first Encyclical Redemptor of hominis, on March 4, 1979. Ekklesia-de-Communion, his last Encyclical, was issued on April 17, 2003.
