Coincidence

The coincidence is a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances that have no apparent causal connection with each other. Perception wonderful of coincidences can lead to the supernatural, occult, or paranormal claims. Or it may lead to belief in fatalism, which is a doctrine that events will occur in strict accordance with the rules given plan.

From a statistical perspective, coincidences are inevitable and often less remarkable than they may appear intuitively. An example is the problem of birth, which shows that the probability of two persons having a birthday in one day already exceeds 50% in a group of only 23 people.

1. Etymology. (Этимология)

The first known use of the word from C. 1605 with the meaning of "exact match on the contents and nature" from French coincidence, from coincider, from medieval Latin coincidere. The definition was developed in the 1640-ies as "the occurrence or existence during the same time", and again in the writings of sir Thomas Browne as "the concurrence of events without apparent connection," about 1680 years.

2. As synchronicity. (Как синхронность)

Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung developed a theory which says that the remarkable coincidences arise from the fact that he called "synchronicity", which he defined as "acausal connecting principle".

Jung-Pauli theory of "synchronicity", was developed by physicist and psychologist, and renowned in their fields, represents perhaps the most radical departure from the worldview of mechanistic science in our time. But they had predecessors, whose ideas had a considerable influence on Jung: the Austrian biologist Paul Kammerer, a wild genius who committed suicide in 1926, at the age of forty five.

One of the Kammerers passions was collecting coincidences. He published a book entitled Das on der series the act series, which was not translated into English. In this book he told about 100 or so anecdotes of coincidences that had led him to formulate his theory of seriality.

He suggested that all events are associated with waves of seriality. Kammerer was known to make notes in public parks, how many people passed by, how many carried umbrellas, etc. albert Einstein called the idea of seriality "interesting, and by no means absurd". Carl Jung, also relied on the Kammerers work in his book synchronicity.

Coincidence there is no obvious causal connection. Coincidence can be a synchronicity, the experience of events which are causally unrelated, but their appearance together makes sense for a person who is watching them. To be regarded as synchronicity, the events should be unlikely to occur together by chance, but it is questioned because there is usually a chance, however small.

Some skeptics, for example, Georges Charpak and Henri Broch argue that synchronicity is just an instance of apophenia. They argue that probability and statistical theory is sufficient to explain remarkable coincidences.

Charles Fort also collected hundreds of accounts of interesting coincidences and paranormal phenomena.

3. Causation. (Причинность)

Measuring the probability of a series of coincidences is the most common way to distinguish coincidence from cause-related events.

The mathematically naive person seems to have a more acute awareness than the specialist of the basic paradox of probability theory, over which philosophers have puzzled ever since Pascal initiated that branch of science. The paradox is, roughly, that probability theory is able to predict with amazing accuracy, the overall outcome of processes made up of many individual events, each of which in itself is unpredictable. In other words, we are seeing a lot of uncertainties producing a certainty, a random events creating a lawful total outcome.

To establish causes and effects, i.e. causality is extremely difficult, as expressed by the often heard statement that "correlation does not mean causation." In statistics it is accepted that observational studies can give hints, but can never establish cause and effect. But given the paradox of the probability to see Koestlers the quote above, it turns out that the larger the set of coincidences, the more certainty rises and the more it seems that there is some reason for an amazing coincidence.

. it is only the manipulation of uncertainty that interests us. We are not concerned with the question of what is uncertain. Thus, we do not study the mechanism of rain, just whether its raining.

I wonder if in long process of time, while fate takes a course here and there, numerous coincidences should spontaneously occur.
